BLS #20 - Learning as an Excuse to Procrastinate
The Read-Aloud Handbook | How to Think For Yourself | Practicing Love | Why You Should Keep a Self-Gratitude Diary
👋 Hello
I have been struggling to make progress in a few projects I have been wanting to do for a year now. Every time I pick up these projects, I get into learning mode and drop the project without progress after a few weeks. This has happened with both work projects and hobbies like woodworking. I am using ‘learning’ as an excuse to procrastinate.
This seems to be a common theme among makes. When I asked how to overcome this, few other makers suggested the following techniques.
Daily Outcomes: Instead of setting monthly or even weekly goals (design a screen or completing the coding) have daily outcomes (check-in code daily).
Accountability Partners: Find someone who can keep you accountable. Accountability partners can be a coach, a mentor, or a friend. When you go off track, they should be able to help you get on track.
Build-in Public: Instead of having one accountability partner, you can announce to the whole world what you are doing. Apart from keeping yourself accountable, building in public can also build an audience for you.
I have been wanting to make a project table for my home to do arts and crafts. I am going to try these ideas to see if I can get out of learning mode and into doing mode.
What do you do to get yourself out of learning mode to doing mode?
