BEING LESS STUPID #18 - Reading Out Loud
The Age of Infinite Leverage | The Thing You Most Want to Save Time on Is a Thing You Shouldn’t Be Doing at All
👋 Hello
Homeschooling is not easy. Most days don’t go as planned. We play and laugh but there are times we fight and shed some tears as well. In the end, is it worth it? Yes.
In the book The One Thing, Gary and Jay ask “What’s the ONE THING I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
The one thing I do that makes everything else easier in our homeschool is “Reading Out Loud”. If I read out loud, I consider the day a success. And the dining table is the best place to read our loud. When kids are eating, we have a captive audience. We have found quite a few traditions in our home to read out loud.
Wake up to Words – I put my kids on my lap and read a book as soon as they wake up
Breakfast and Books – I pick a picture book and read to them before breakfast
Lunch and reLearn – I reread our family's favorite books during lunch.
Books before Bed – We sit together after dinner and read a book
Pick a time that works for you and your kids. Keep lots of books around for choice. Make some tradition and read out loud.
Library and the Internet are free passes to teach ourselves anything. What one needs is motivation and knowing how to learn. My goal with homeschooling is to teach my kids how to learn so that they can learn whatever interests them.
Books are the gateway to learning. Reading out loud is the best way to make your kids fall in love with books.
