Let me be a programmer
While in this mental state, people are completely involved and focused on what they are doing. - Mihály Csíkszentmihályi
Flow is a state of mindset in which you are fully immersed in an activity. I was in a flow state this past few days. I was completely absorbed in the design and coding of an app I am working on. I have been coding this app for a few months now, but it picked up speed this past week.
I was able to solve problems with no distractions. I stopped checking time. I was thinking about the problem and finding solutions all the time.
This past week has been fun. I am so loving it. I don't remember when was the last time I was working like this. If I love coding so much, why did I stop coding in the first place? Ha. I know. When they promoted me as a manager.
In consulting companies, there is a hierarchy. You will be promoted to managerial positions as you grow in the company. It is rare to find time to code as we climb up the ladder.
Naturally good programmers are going to be promoted and the company will be left with average programmers coding the application.
Stop promoting good developers, designers, and coders. Pay them well without promoting them. You will have a better result with people doing what they love to do. Let me a programmer.
